Abstract

The present study applies conversation analysis in order to describe the form and function of co-constructed turns in conversations involving one or more persons who stutter. Co-constructed turns are turns at talk that are produced by more than one speaker in such a way that the turn is initiated by one speaker and completed by another. Examples in the data are classified according to an existing taxonomy distinguishing between slot fillers, extensions and completions. All these types are found in our data, albeit to different extents. External as well as internal reasons for this distributional variation are discussed. The main aim of the study is to illustrate the need for qualitative, context-sensitive approaches to research on verbal interaction in the field of fluency disorders and to focus on some clinical implications of such research findings.

Marianne Lind, University of Oslo

Marianne Lind, is dr.art. in clinical linguistics from the University of Oslo, Norway. She is senior adviser at Statped, Department of speech and language disorders, and researcher at The Center for Multilingualism in Society across the Lifespan (CoE MultiLing), University of Oslo. Her research includes studies of conversations involving speakers with speech and language disorders (aphasia, stuttering), investigation of oral text production abilities in speakers with aphasia and neurologically healthy speakers, and studies of morphological processing in speakers with aphasia. She is affilated to (1) Statped, Department of speech and language disorders, Norway and (2) CoE MultiLing, University of Oslo, Norway.

Hilda Sønsterud, Statped

Hilda Sønsterud is a speech and language therapist from the University of Oslo, Norway. She is senior adviser at Statped, Department of Speech and Language Disorders, where she works primarily with treatment, education and research related to fluency disorders. She runs courses in the fields of stuttering and cluttering and provides clinical training and practice for SLTs and SLT students. Hilda Sønsterud is the Norwegian representative on the Stuttering Research and Education Network (sturen.org), national representative on the Committee of International Representatives in the International Cluttering Association (ICA) and chair of the Meetings and Conferences Committee of the International Fluency Association (IFA). Hilda Sønsterud is affiliated to Statped, Department of speech and language disorders, Norway.
