Abstract

Peter Cooke alerted me to this poem where, for the first time in the modern era, the term gastronomie was deployed. It seemed to me useful that the full text might be made available to readers, although I should apologize for printing it in its original French. The text which I have followed is that of the fifth edition, the first having appeared in 1801. I propose to reprint its four cantos in successive issues of PPC, starting here with the prefatory matter and the first canto. Peter Cooke has kindly agreed to contribute an introduction.
