Abstract

Georgina Masson's eclectic collection of recipes, of which one for Easter is presented here, is the result of a wandering life spent mostly in Oriental, African and Mediterranean countries. She tells us that the Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen (whose biography she wrote recently) and the Borgia Pope Alexander VI (about whom she is now writing) had one taste in common - each ate only one meal a day. She knows what the Emperor favoured (scapece), but is still looking for Borgia recipes of a wholesome kind, having so far found only some excellent contemporary recipes for poisons, which are hardly suitable for this journal.
