Abstract

An essay reflecting on the changes that the author observed in the local culinary scene when she returned to live in rural Scotland in 2000. Most pronounced were the rise of artisanal makers and a new emphasis on fresh veg as well as more variety in the mainstream shops.

    Jane Stevenson is Regius Professor of Humanity at the University of Aberdeen. She is also a novelist and has written a life of the artist Edward Burrough. With Peter Davidson, she edited Prospect’s edition of Sir Kenelm Digby.
