Looks at letters written by Pushkin following gastronomic travelogue is unique testimony of life on the road for gentlemen of ease in provincial Russia of that time. Local gastronomic specialities seem to have coexisted with international ones in perfect harmony, although of course it should be remembered that it was the number-one road in the country, the one travelled by the crème de la crème all the time because it connected the two cities of utmost importance, Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, the past and the present capitals of Russia.
