Abstract

This article looks at Roots and Shoots, an independent, educational and environmental charity based in Kennington, South London. Now a respected vocational training organisation with biodiverse wildlife gardens, it has its roots in the "settlement" movements of the late Victorian period when volunteers from the monied classes moved to the London slums and set up facilities for training and supporting local residents. The article describes some of the culinary events that the contemporary team have sponsored.
