Abstract

This paper presents a detailed comparison of Bernard Herrmann’s original score for the 1959 fantasy film Journey to the Center of the Earth with the music that appeared on the soundtrack of the film released to the public. Traces of scenes and music edited out of the film are found in the theatrical trailer, in various drafts of the screenplay, in sound recordings and in Herrmann’s manuscripts. Each music cue composed by Herrmann is analyzed to reveal the extent to which it was modified in the final edits of the movie.
