Abstract

Adrian McNeil's contextual analysis of the collaboration between VM Bhatt and Ry Cooder on their Meeting by the River CD, and the degree to which its project reflected the earlier intersection of Hawaiian styles and traditional Indian music, also shows how the contemporary notion of 'World Music' tends to collapse complex cultural exchanges into a simple commodity tag - one which privileges the West's identification and enablement of the global 'other' within a Western market.
