International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice

The ALAPP conference aims to bring together scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds, especially language and communication research, and professional specialities (e.g. mediation, management, business, law, journalism, education, healthcare, social care, therapy, translation and interpreting). ALAPP welcomes contributions on any topic linking professional practice with language and communication issues.

ALAPP was launched in Cardiff (UK) in 2011 as a non-profit event, which continues to be self-financing from income generated through registration fees. It takes place annually spanning 3 days, and the preferred time slot is mid-September. The number of participants at ALAPP is variable – ranging between 150 and 300 – representing more than 20/25 countries on a given occasion. The participants are mainly drawn from humanities and social sciences and other professional settings.

ALAPP proposals fall into different presentation formats: plenaries, panels, work-in-progress roundtables and individual presentations (oral or poster). For more details, see the Conference Announcement below.

ALAPP Masterclass
The ALAPP conference is preceded/followed by the ALAPP Masterclass, broadly titled Engaging qualitatively with institutional and professional discourse, led by Srikant Sarangi. It is open to all ALAPP participants and others.

The Candlin Lecture
One of the ALAPP plenaries is designated as The Candlin Lecture (in memory of the co-founder, Christopher N. Candlin) and the theme of this lecture aligns with one or many of the conceptual and methodological themes at the interface of applied linguistics and professional discourse studies.

The Candlin Researcher Award
This award was instituted in 2016 in recognition of Christopher N. Candlin’s passion and commitment to supporting doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. The award is given to the best research paper presented by a doctoral and postdoctoral researcher at the ALAPP conference. In addition to the certificate and the offer of publication of the winning article in a future issue of JALPP after peer-review, the award comprises one year’s free subscription to the journal as well as a hard copy of the JALPP Candlin Special Volume consisting of 3 issues.

The ALAPP Society
Members of the ALAPP Society are entitled to discounts for ALAPP registration and JALPP journal subscription. The website can be accessed at: https://journal.equinoxpub.com/JALPP/about/submissions and ‘subscription prices’ at https://journal.equinoxpub.com/JALPP/about/subscriptions/#prices

Publication Opportunities
All presenters at ALAPP conferences are encouraged to submit written versions of their work for possible inclusion in the Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice (JALPP). If a sufficient number of accepted submissions is reached, a special issue will be designated to comprise the ALAPP submissions. Alternatively, accepted individual manuscripts will appear in regular issues. Note that all submissions will go through the routine double blind peer review system. The guidelines for online submission can be accessed here and the JALPP house style here. Please direct all journal-related enquiries to [email protected]

Hosting of future ALAPPs
Over the years ALAPP has maintained an international profile. It is of a manageable size with a close-knit community of researchers for organisational purposes. If you would be inclined to host a future ALAPP, please send your expression of interest to [email protected]
