Book reviewAbstract
Book review of 'Vicarious language: Gender and linguistic modernity in Japan' by Miyako Inoue, published by University of California Press in 2006.
‘Japanese women’s language’ has been the focus of a great deal of scholarly work in the fields of linguistics and sociocultural anthropology. Its existence has also continually been authenticated by mass media and popular ideologies of language and gender. In 'Vicarious Language', Miyako Inoue puts forward a new and important perspective on ‘Japanese women’s language.’
