Abstract

In 1974 Jane Grigson published English Food to restore some faith in England’s culinary heritage and show that there was a great deal of merit in the traditional, domestic cooking of this nation. Fifty years on, Sam Bilton reflects on the relevance of this work today.

  • Sam Bilton, Independent Scholar

    Food historian, writer and podcaster Sam Bilton has been intrigued by spices most of her life. She has published two books with Prospect Books – First Catch Your Gingerbread (2021) and Fool’s Gold: A History of British Saffron. Sam’s third book The Philosophy of Chocolate was published by the British Library in October 2023. Sam also edits PPC and presents the Comfortably Hungry and A is for Apple
