Abstract

American Army officers landing in France on D-Day (6 June 1944) were issued with a special edition of the 1939 Michelin Guide to France. Printed by the War Department in Washington in 1944, it was identical to the 1939 Guide except for the wording on the cover, which indicated it was reproduced by the Military Intelligence Division, ‘For Official Use Only’. It provided soliders with invaluable information about the French road system, street maps of major towns, as well as information about ‘les bonnes tables’ frequented by gourmets before the war.
