Abstract

Provides a history of the the Mercado do Bolhão, the market in Portugal's second largest city, Porto which was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2006. Since publication of this paper the market's future was temporarily in limbo but funding was secured for extensive renovations which took place over 4 years, and it was re-opened in 2022. The article includes many illustrations of the old facility and its stalls.
