A study of Colonel Newnham-Davis’s The Gourmet’s Guide to Europe. The Gourmet’s Guide is significant in that it presents a record of food as a form of privileged leisure activity for the wealthy and the adventurous middle-classes at the time of the so-called belle époque. An era of lavish hedonistic leisure for some, it was also a time of change, new money, advances in technology, communication and transport prior to the outbreak of the First World War. These innovative guides introduced food as an attractive activity to the affluent and venturesome Edwardian travelling public, those who were becoming accustomed to European travel, tourism and eating out.
