Abstract

A study of Colonel Newnham-Davis’s The Gourmet’s Guide to Europe. The Gourmet’s Guide is significant in that it presents a record of food as a form of privileged leisure activity for the wealthy and the adventurous middle-classes at the time of the so-called belle époque. An era of lavish hedonistic leisure for some, it was also a time of change, new money, advances in technology, communication and transport prior to the outbreak of the First World War. These inno­vative guides introduced food as an attractive activity to the affluent and venturesome Edwardian travelling public, those who were becoming accustomed to European travel, tourism and eating out.
