Abstract

In some ways I feel like I don't quite fit today's celebration of the centenary of suffrage for Queensland women in Parliament. So far we've been hearing much about the state Parliament and very little about federal Parliament, I must somehow or other balance that up.

  • Kathy Sullivan

    Kathy Sullivan is the longest serving woman parliamentarian in Australia's history. She served in the federal Senate from May 1974 to December 1984, and in the House of Representatives from December 1984 to October 2001, when she retired. She was the first woman to be elected to both the House of Representatives and the Senate. She is also the only woman ever elected 10 times to an Australian Parliament and the first woman to be appointed as a House of Representatives whip. She was Shadow Minister for Home Affairs and Administrative Services (1983-84), Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Leader ofthe Opposition (1993-94) and Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Australia's Special Representative for Demining (1997-2000). She was also a Member of the House of Representatives Speaker's Panel (Deputy Speaker) for four years.
