Abstract

We women of the twenty-first century owe the early women seekers of female franchise a considerable debt. Without their intellectual and sometimes physical bravery, we would not have the range of privileges we now take for granted as our right.

  • Joan Sheldon AM, Australian Institute of Management

    Joan Sheldon AM is a former Queensland Deputy Premier and Treasurer, who is currently the inaugural Executive in Residence at the Australian Institute of Management - Queensland and Northern Territory. In 1991, she was elected Leader of the Queensland Liberals, making her the first woman to lead a political party in the state. From 1996 to 1998, she was Queensland's first female Deputy Premier and Treasurer. She was also the first woman to lead the state as acting Premier. Since retiring from politics, Mrs Sheldon has joined the boards of three not-for-profit organisations as chair, including the Queensland Ballet. In 2005 she was appointed a Member ofthe Order of Australia. Joan is a trained physiotherapist and is currently undertaking a Master of Business Administration.
