Eschewing conventional approaches to religious tolerance in the study of Islam, the present study makes explicit an account of religious tolerance, and the larger discursive repertoire (psychological, anthropological and theological) in which it is grounded and to which it is linked, in the teachings of the ninth century Arab, Muslim thinker and moral pedagogue, al-Harith b. Asad al-Muhasibi (d. 857). I highlight the crucial role of suggestions in Muhasibi's vision of proper subjectivity and analyze how this vision relates to his implicit and complicated account of religious tolerance.References
