Detail in seedsmen’s catalogues and other ephemera, issued from the end of the sixteenth century to the eve of the First World War is sampled to illustrate the information published on vegetables, their cultivation and consumption, together with various aspects of the seed trade during this period. A brief overview of the dissemination of knowledge on vegetable cultivation provided by seed catalogues, including French catalogues, broadens the study.
