Abstract

David Hume is known for his skeptical philosophy founded on empirical experience and inquiry. It may be less known that he also emphasises the civilising significance of empathy in everyday discourse and sociability. Hume was generous and convivial: he delighted in the enjoyment of food and drink with acquaintances and friends. The small dinners where he served his guests Scottish dishes became famous in Enlightenment Edinburgh.
