Abstract

This paper was originally prepared for oral presentation at the Houston Church of Freethought - April 9, 2006, service. The HCOF members include humanists, atheists, agnostics, and other freethinkers. The paper argues that compassion is consistent with Freethought and supplies some suggestions for bringing it to the fore in everyday life.

    Daniel Strain is a humanist minister and president of the Humanists of Houston. He has written for several newsletters and appeared as a panelist in philosophy forums and on the Houston PBS television program The Connection. An artist and marketing director, he maintains a website and philosophy blog at dtstrainphilosophy.blogspot.com, where his writing largely concerns the interface between ancient philosophy, modern science, and humanism. Emphasis is placed on the role of applied philosophy in modern living, made accessible to a wide variety of people.
