Abstract

An essay exploring the failure of the Freethought Movement to repell the Religious Right in American politics

Author Biography

  • Jeff Nall, Journalist

    Jeff Nall has written for publications such as the Humanist, Freethought Today, Toward Freedom, the Humanist Network News, and IMPACT press. A noted activist in his community, in 2003 Jeff helped lead the anti-war movement in Brevard County Florida, and has since organized 90 demonstrations for marriage equality, reproductive rights, and civil liberties. Earlier this year he helped reorganize the Brevard chapter of the National Organization for Women. An account of a dramatic protest that led to significant police surveillance reform in his community will appear in the upcoming book, The Cost of Freedom, from Howling Dog Press, which features several articles written by a variety of activists. Currently a liberal studies graduate student at Rollins College in Florida, Jeff has spoken at conferences such as the 2005 Secular Student Alliance Conference and this year’s 30th Annual Meeting of the Association for Humanist Sociology. His recent work, Illusions of Conversion, which tackles Catholicism’s supposed spiritual conquest of the Aztecs in the 16th century, is slated to appear in Fall 2006 issue of The Journal of Graduate Liberal Studies. He lives in Brevard County Florida with his wife, Desiree, and their daughter, Charlotte.
