International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice

The ALAPP conference aims to bring together scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds, especially language and communication research, and professional specialities (e.g. mediation, management, business, law, journalism, education, healthcare, social care, therapy, translation and interpreting). ALAPP welcomes contributions on any topic linking professional practice with language and communication issues.

ALAPP was launched in Cardiff (UK) in 2011 as a non-profit event, which continues to be self-financing from income generated through registration fees. It takes place annually spanning 3 days, and the preferred time slot is mid-September. The number of participants at ALAPP is variable – ranging between 150 and 300 – representing more than 20/25 countries on a given occasion. The participants are mainly drawn from humanities and social sciences and other professional settings.

ALAPP proposals fall into different presentation formats: plenaries, panels, work-in-progress roundtables and individual presentations (oral or poster). For more details, see the Conference Announcement below.

ALAPP Masterclass

The Candlin Lecture
One of the ALAPP plenaries is designated as The Candlin Lecture (in memory of the co-founder, Christopher N. Candlin) and the theme of this lecture aligns with one or many of the conceptual and methodological themes at the interface of applied linguistics and professional discourse studies.

The Candlin Researcher Award
This award was instituted in 2016 in recognition of Christopher N. Candlin’s passion and commitment to supporting doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. The award is given to the best research paper presented by a doctoral and postdoctoral researcher at the ALAPP conference. In addition to the certificate and the offer of publication of the winning article in a future issue of JALPP after peer-review, the award comprises one year’s free subscription to the journal as well as a hard copy of the JALPP Candlin Special Volume consisting of 3 issues.
